"A modern interpretation of ‘Islamic’ calligraphy, the paintings and graphics of the German-Afghan artist Aatifi show in an impressive manner how elements of a longstanding cultural and art-history tradition are revived through spectacular re-interpretations. In this way, Persian or Arabic calligraphy – the most important art form in the classical Islamic world – is transformed from an only culturally comprehensible ‘written code’ into part of a modern international art language, which in Aatifi’s case is of a particularly high quality."
