Two dozen abstract-scriptural works by the artist Aatifi will be on display at the Museum Ratingen from 17 April to 12 July 2015: new paintings and ink drawings as well as prints from previous years. On the opening evening, the artist will also present his documentary film about the art scene in the Afghan capital, Kabul.

The aesthetics of form, colour and light, power and dynamics, depth and space are at the forefront of Aatifi’s abstract paintings and prints. Born in Kandahar, Afghanistan, the artist has developed an independent, universal visual language – without any reference to text – from traditional calligraphy. In his colour-intensive works, he combines calligraphic fragments with stylistic elements of modern art.
